Revelation 22:1-7
On this penultimate Sunday of my pastorate, I will again preach from Revelation — chapter 22:1-7.
It is helpful to read Revelation 21 through to 22:7. In this section of the letter, John uses highly-metaphorical language to point toward the ultimate state of creation at the end of history. As you read, focus more on images than ideas. This is not a philosophical or theological tract, but a work of poetry.
Consider the fact that John’s Revelation emphasizes, not a return to the Garden of Eden, but a renewed city: the new Jerusalem. What does this say to you about a God who creates rather than a God who restores what was?
Let these words, written in Revelation 21:5 and now repeated in Revelation 22:6, ring in your heat: “These words are trustworthy and true."
