Psalm 40:1-11
Now that Christmas has passed (and the two one-day seasons of Epiphany and Baptism of the Lord), we come to a series of Sundays comprising the Season after Epiphany. These Sundays are essentially the bridge between the Season of Christmas and the Season of Lent. This Sunday, January 15, is the 2nd Sunday after Epiphany. During this season, I will be preaching solely from the Psalms.
This week, my sermon is based on Psalm 40:1-11. This is regarded as a Psalm of Thanksgiving for deliverance, and it can easily be read as an individual prayer.
The Psalmist speaks very poetically in Psalm 40:1-2. When have you felt yourself to be in “the desolate pit” or “the miry bog”? It might have been during the pandemic. It might be in a relationship in your family, or at work, or in your neighborhood.
Focus on the verbs that describe the Psalmist’s inner state: “waited patiently”, “…a new song in my mouth…”, “…trust…”.
How does the Psalm instruct you and inspire you to seek God’s “steadfast love”?
